Yes, what you're looking at are exactly two #baboons, painted in memory of a gift to #PaulIII, the first Pope of the #counterreformation, brought by foreign #ambassadors.
In fact, we are in the #PaolinaRoom of #CastelSantAngelo, the #diplomacy room in the papal apartment.
Perin del Vaga and his team of #artists decorated it from 1545 to 1547.
The baboons are surrounded by Alexander the Great's, the emperor Hadrian's, Archangel San Michael's and San Paul's stories giving us a sample of the #Renaissance's irony and diplomacy!

Welcomed at the #SpanishSteps!
So-called because a guy got lost in translation and crashed the proper name of the underlying #square and the one of the monumental #Steps to the #Church #Trinity of the Mountains.
The #stairs were build only in 18th century and financed by the French King from whom the church and its beautiful monastery were depending.
#PiazzaDiSpagna owns its name to the historical embassy of Spain to the Holy See.
As soon as they were build they got filled with girls from the southern region of Ciociaria selling #flowers.
Today only in this period of the year the Steps are covered of beautiful plants of #Azalea reminding the #colourful meeting of people of different regions and social classes in one of the #mostExpensive quarter of #Rome.

The #Babington room was founded in 1893 by Isabel Cargill and Anna Maria Babington, two English ladies of good family who came to Rome with the intention of opening a #tea and #readingRoom for the Anglo-Saxon community, when tea could still be purchased only at the pharmacy.

Still managed today by the family of Isabel Cargill, Babington is synonymous with the art of serving #EnglishTea in accordance with the most rigorous #tradition, offering its customers a menu full of sweet and savory #delicacies.

In addition to a selection of the best teas and infusions from all over the world, you can buy in the boutique: Babington's personalized tea sets, pastries, ceramics and the exclusive range seven teas of #Rome, inspired by the different highlights of the #eternalCity.

In the middle of #Rome inside the Palace of the Roman College, build in 16th century, there is an old beautiful library.

The palace was chosen because of its importance and its position as the seat of the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele II, designed and built by Ruggero Bonghi, the Minister of Education (1874-1876).

On that occasion, it was built from scratch the Reading Room, which runs parallel to the longitudinal arm of the Crociera library. It was a reworkingof a design by the architect, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, according to the project Engineer Francesco Bongioannini .

There were gathered the huge collections of books, manuscripts and incunaboli monastery libraries of the 60 forfeited by the Italian State. The room, set up initially for consultation only at the bottom, it was later modified by the adaptation of the eighteenth-century wooden shelves of the library of Portuguese father from Fonseca Ebora, from the Franciscan convent of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, convent then sacrificed to the construction of the Vittoriano building on Venice Square.

On the footsteps of an Italian actor and Latin lover I got across this hotel. Staying in the heart of Rome is a unique experience, in fact confirmed sources narrate that the area in which it currently stands the structure has been spectator over years of historical events; starting from 74 B.C. with the magnificence of the Horti Luculliani, passing through the innovative urban project of Pope Sisto V, that placed Via Sistina as the first direct connection between Pincio and Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, at the beginning of the 20th century the "Strada Felice" welcomed one of the first inns in the area of the current "The Code Hotel".
Every detail in these historical buildings deserves to be discovered piece by piece giving a new light to shapes and fragments that show the transformation of the building over time, becoming a code of interpretation of the city history over the centuries.

In the 1700s, Scottish doctor #GeorgeCleghorn discovered that quinine could treat #malaria.
By the 1800s, #BritishSoldiers stationed in India were drinking #gin (or any available #alcohol) and tonic to get their daily dose of #quinine, which is the active ingredient in tonic water, to prevent malaria.
“The #GinandTonic #drink has saved more Englishmen’s lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire,” Winston #Churchill once said.
For sure in the last troublesome years G&T chilled some minds out and #Rome is not left behind in the international competition between #GinBars.
Look how nice and how much care has been put in the #G&T of the picture prepared in @caffedoria with a #rose and a curly slice of #cucumber. It's a pity I appreciate the #aesthetic, the design and it was a pleasant experience but still prefer a good #glass of wine.

It's nine o'clock in Rome and waiting my guests I listen to the noise of water and admire this #masterpiece: the #MoorFountain.

I'm at the southern end of #PiazzaNavona in front of #palazzoPamphili, today the #BrasilianEmbassy.

It shows a muscular #Ethiopian standing in a #conchShell #wrestling with a #dolphin and surrounded by #Tritons, all in a basin of antique rose-colored #marble. The fountain was originally designed in 1575 by #GiacomoDellaPorta, the genius of #RomanFountains, during the reign of Pope Gregory XIII #Boncompagni. He planned the dolphin and the beautiful Tritons blowing #water out through shells.

In 1653, Pope Innocent X #Pamphilj asked #GianLorenzoBernini to add the statue of the #Moor in the center. Bernini designed that sculpture, but it was actually sculpted by Giannantonio Mari.

During a #restoration of the fountain in 1874, the original statues were moved to a small square in Villa Borghese and replaced with #copies made by Luigi Amici.

When I've to give an #officialPhoto of me I would love to get an unique #specialShot just for it. But, I'm a difficult subject... and #selfies are not my thing!
In spite of it, Rome can always surprise me and when I was not even thinking about a nice shot, taking advantage of the beautiful light, there it is.
Before a #cityTour, in the early morning, before the #Pantheon and its gorgeous #barock #fountain, the background is the real subject: the #beautyofRome.

We are at #VillaGiulia, a #Renaissance jewel where you can wonder about almost alone and discover the story of ancient #Etruscans, one of the earliest #ItalianPopulations.

There is this amazing beautiful #porch and you're looking at one of its cross #vaults, covered by a painted #pergola where half-moon openings to the blue sky are animated by #cupids playing music, dancing and collecting flowers. The Pergola is made by jasmines and if you look carefully you might find a pheasant.

Other vaults present black and white grapes, red, white and pink roses that probably grew in the garden just in front of it. There is a lot of playful irony in the paintings that might have been executed by Prospero Fontana (1512–1597), a Bolognese painter of late Renaissance and #Mannerist. He was specialized in #frescoes and amazing #architecturaldetailing.

In the middle of #Rome center, there is a Palace that signs the crossing of #RomanArchitecture from #MiddleAges to #Renaissance: #PalazzoVenezia.

It's a fortress with a bulky tower, it has a church from IV B.C., inglobated in the structure as Palace chapel, it's elegant, refined. It has an internal courtyard with a fountain and benches and a Viridarium, a secret cloister with a luxurious garden.

From the outside, everybody knows it and the XVIII century balcony became sadly famous for Mussolini's speeches in his twenties (1922-1943). He had his studio there in the so-called #worldmaproom.

But the treasures are inside: there is #peace, #beauty, #ancientMasterpieces #care. I chose to show you a small detail of the amazing floor that is of terracotta with these #MajolicaTiles, made in modern times after historical studies and handcraft skilled work.

It's like a miracle, a message coming from history and being given to us by skilled careful modern messengers. Is it a #dove with an #acorn? I still don't know, but I will find out. For me, at the moment it's the symbol of the responsibility we all have to go behind the facade and discover to care and instore true peace.

We don't know when this #convent was built for the first time. The Church attached to it, whose official name is Santa Maria Nova, but called by the people Santa #FrancescaRomana, was erected on an oratory between the IX and X centuries, and one hundred years after, we have the trace of monks living next store.
In 1351 a #monastery of the #OlivetanBenedictine #monks was founded here, which survived until sequestration by the Italian state in 1873.
The monastery occupies part of the site of the great ancient #temple dedicated to Venus Felix and Roma Aeterna, founded by the emperor Hadrian in the year 135, on a large podium measuring 145 meters long and 100 meters wide and surrounding it with a colonnaded #portico. Some of the rest of this amazing building can still be admired here.
In the picture, you can notice a beautiful plant of #Jasmin and the different structures #overlapping in the #cloister.

It's #1890. #VincentVanGogh painted this #pietà a few months before his #death.
It is a small format painted for his sister.
He rarely treated #religiousSubjects, but this is part of a series of homages to colleagues he admired. It was painted after a lithography of the Pietà by #EugèneDelacroix.
He made a first version bigger and with brighter colours for his brother.
What strikes mostly in this little canvas in the #ContemporaryArt Collection of the #Vatican is the sun rising behind the #Madonna, a common peasant, serene, showing us her son #sacrifice.

Some critics has seen in the #redBeard of #Jesus a self-reference even if the features correspond to Delacroix's #painting.

Thanks to the Pope Paul VI, you can admire often this moving #masterpiece while visiting the #VaticanMuseums.

In 2008 this part of an equestrian statue was found, probably one of the statues that adorned the arches of the #Colosseum. It was found during the repaving of the square in front of the Flavian Amphitheater, on the side of the Celio hill.

The left side of a knight is perfectly visible with the detail of a leg, the bridle and the harness of a horse, as well as a part of the pillowcase of a dagger ...

but in this photograph there is also Nerina, the she-cat that often glimpsed among the ruins and left us last year.

To her and to all those who have gone but as angels remain in our thoughts I dedicate this post and many of my dreams and hopes.

To drink a good #localBeer outside kissed by the #sunshine in #Rome is possible even in February, our coldest month.

It's also possible to #drink Rome:
it's an #ipa, non filtered, non pasteurized (a sediment of yeast is present in the bottle), made by #brewery San Gimignano for #pilgrims.

It tastes #hops, mango, grapefruit, gooseberry and cardamom!

The name was chosen because Rome is the term of the Via #Francigena and of all the other roads! The same happens when you step into a Roman #Maze ( look at the label!).

Thanks to @centopercentobio for the beer and to host us often for a delicious lunch at the ancient San Paul Gate!
